US Kids Golf Players

Sparkling golf matched the sunshine conditions as the cream of the world’s young golfing talent dazzled in the prestigious U.S. Kids Golf European Championship.

Competitors from no less than eight different countries – including the small central American nation of Guatemala – scooped European Championship titles, reflecting both the growth and spread of junior golf throughout the world.

Best round of the tournament was the last round, seven under par 65 carded by Philipp Matlari from Germany in the boys 12 age group while Liverpool’s Eloise Healey, Samantha Fuller from Kingston-upon-Thames and Monet Flores (Guatemala) each won their third European title in a row.  Frank Olav Garber (USA) also retained his European Championship crown.

But the highlight of the championships was the three holes-in-one scored by Kristjan Vojteh Berkelca, Lucy Walton and Lewis Reid over three different courses.

The competition – played over Gullane No. 2, Gullane No. 3, Craigielaw Golf Club and Longniddry Golf Club – was organised by the U.S. Kids Golf Foundation, which aims to promote the game of golf to young players and their families around the world.

Youngsters being swept along by the surge in interest in dance and acrobatic troupes from shows such as Britain’s Got Talent are being warned they risk serious injury by not taking expert advice to protect their bodies.

You don’t have to channel surf for too long to find a TV talent show featuring the best of Britain’s amateur performers while movie goers have put Streetdance 3D to the top of the cinema charts.

The trend has made household names of groups like Diversity while this Saturday’s final of Britain’s Got Talent will see spectacular acrobatic group Spellbound aim for glory.

Whilst this may encourage youngsters to live out their dreams of stardom, concern is being raised that they need to also think about the immense pressures that these talented performers put their bodies under on a daily basis and how this translates to young and not yet fully developed bodies.

Led by physiotherapist Kirsten Lord, The Physiotherapy Centres, with bases in Edinburgh and Glasgow city centres, work with numerous young performers to help them to keep their bodies healthy and prevent long term problems developing.

Kenny King FFDR

Scotland’s leading disaster recovery firm is marking the launch a new Scottish office with a high-profile appointment.

 FFDR, an all trades contractor specialising in salvaging flood and fire-ravaged properties has attracted respected insurance expert Kenny King to head its north east operation.

 Father of two Kenny, 46, from Bridge of Don, has spent the past eight years working with a nationwide facilities services group, assessing insurance cases.

He will now be based in FFDR’s newly-opened Stonehaven office, and will recruit a team of 12 tradesmen within months, and up to 25 within a year.

Scottish PR agency Holyrood Partnership has enhanced its team with the appointment of former journalist Kirsty Taylor.

Kirsty, 25, joined the Holyrood Partnership after a stint working in the Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society’s press and marketing team, where she helped international arts companies promote their work.

She added: “The face of journalism and media relations is changing like never before, and as someone with a print reporter’s CV I knew it was more important than ever to keep my skills ahead of the game.

“I was incredibly impressed with the vision for using online and video journalism in Holyrood Partnership’s PR work, while not losing sight of traditional media strategies to help their clients.”

Scott Douglas, co-founder of the Scottish PR agency said: “Kirsty is a real catch. She sailed into a job with us.”

Eating Well report

The majority of Scotland’s care homes for older people are ensuring residents eat and drink properly – but the Care Commission has warned that it remains concerned at the number of complaints it receives about poor nutrition.

A new Care Commission report details the quality of nutritional care in Scotland’s care homes based on an analysis of inspections from 303 care homes, complaint investigations and enforcement action.

The Eating Well in Care Homes for Older People report found:

  • More than half of the homes met the Scottish Government’s National Care Standards for eating, drinking and nutrition
  • Most homes (85%) have policies and procedures for eating well
  • Nearly three-quarters (71%) screen for under-nutrition
  • 91 complaints were made – with 76 being upheld or partially upheld
  • 101 requirements and 38 recommendations were made as a result of these complaints
  • The largest issue for complaints were about people’s dietary needs not being met, in particular not giving people enough to drink
  • Improvement notices were served on 10 care homes to enforce improvements in the quality of nutrition and hydration to older people

Digital specialist Gecko New Media has been named the first in Scotland to be certified by a world leader in website content management systems.

News of the appointment as a Certified Solution Provider came through late on Friday from Umbraco headquarters in Denmark – with a personal message of congratulations from its creator.

“We’re over the moon about becoming the first certified solution provider in Scotland” says Dave Malins – technical director at Gecko New Media ltd.

“We’ve been working with Umbraco for quite a while now, and are very active in the umbraco community. Becoming certified providers is a great feather in our cap, as it assures our clients that they are in safe hands.

Hedge Rage Victims

Victims of divisive high hedge disputes in Scotland are being urged to play their part to help convince the Scottish Government to finally bring in legislation to tackle the problem.

Campaign group Scothedge believes thousands of people in Scotland have their lives blighted by thoughtless and sometimes malicious neighbours who grow outsized hedges, trees and shrubs.

Now they are launching a nationwide campaign to highlight a Scottish Government consultation which is attempting to measure the scale of the issue and to seek views on how disputes could be effectively resolved.

The group has been running for more than a decade and has 250 members, many of whom live in fear as a result of incessant and sometimes vicious disputes with neighbours over vegetation growth.

Campaign leader Dr Colin Watson said: “We call it vegetation tyranny and the effect it can have on a victim’s life is quite profound. In the most extreme cases it can leave people living in terror from threats of violence and the need to involve the police.”

26AUGYard-ChippyThe most famous way of eating fish and chips – wrapped in newspaper – has returned to an Edinburgh restaurant after a practical joke by chef Tony Delicata.

A friend of Tony’s called in at the newly-opened family restaurant, The Yard, Leith  in Bonnington Road, and ordered a meal of fish and chips.

Joker Tony decided to serve up an added surprise, by wrapping it up like a takeaway fish supper – and added: “For a bit of fun we decided to wrap it upcomplete with old newspaper, like you would get it at the chip shop. We also took out a bottle of chippie brown sauce that we had.

“We’ve since had people come in again asking for it that way, so we’re going to offer it this way – complete with the chip shop bottle of sauce for that authentic experience.”

Digital specialist Gecko New Media has made a number of key appointments as it enjoys sustained growth in its full service digital agency.

 The firm has built an impressive client base since launch in 2003 and has recently added to its roster with legal firm Simpson & Marwick, national window cleaning contractor Greig Avinou, social enterprise Space Unlimited and renowned Edinburgh girls’ school, St George’s.

 As well as employing two new developers, Gecko has appointed Dave Malins as Technical Director. He has been with the company since March 2008, joining after six years as a senior developer with Storm ID.

 Mhairi Bell, 30, co-founded Gecko New Media with business partner Mike Octigan, 37. She said that from the outset the business focused on achieving the best return on investment for its clients, by fully understanding their needs and providing full support.

 The pair spotted early that websites would become far more than simple online brochures. Recognising the web would take centre stage as an integral business tool, they committed themselves in encouraging and helping clients to embed digital as part of their overall business strategy.
