Youngsters being swept along by the surge in interest in dance and acrobatic troupes from shows such as Britain’s Got Talent are being warned they risk serious injury by not taking expert advice to protect their bodies.

You don’t have to channel surf for too long to find a TV talent show featuring the best of Britain’s amateur performers while movie goers have put Streetdance 3D to the top of the cinema charts.

The trend has made household names of groups like Diversity while this Saturday’s final of Britain’s Got Talent will see spectacular acrobatic group Spellbound aim for glory.

Whilst this may encourage youngsters to live out their dreams of stardom, concern is being raised that they need to also think about the immense pressures that these talented performers put their bodies under on a daily basis and how this translates to young and not yet fully developed bodies.

Led by physiotherapist Kirsten Lord, The Physiotherapy Centres, with bases in Edinburgh and Glasgow city centres, work with numerous young performers to help them to keep their bodies healthy and prevent long term problems developing.

Scotland’s leading disaster recovery firm is marking the launch a new Scottish office with a high-profile appointment.

 FFDR, an all trades contractor specialising in salvaging flood and fire-ravaged properties has attracted respected insurance expert Kenny King to head its north east operation.

 Father of two Kenny, 46, from Bridge of Don, has spent the past eight years working with a nationwide facilities services group, assessing insurance cases.

He will now be based in FFDR’s newly-opened Stonehaven office, and will recruit a team of 12 tradesmen within months, and up to 25 within a year.

Digital specialist Gecko New Media has made a number of key appointments as it enjoys sustained growth in its full service digital agency.

 The firm has built an impressive client base since launch in 2003 and has recently added to its roster with legal firm Simpson & Marwick, national window cleaning contractor Greig Avinou, social enterprise Space Unlimited and renowned Edinburgh girls’ school, St George’s.

 As well as employing two new developers, Gecko has appointed Dave Malins as Technical Director. He has been with the company since March 2008, joining after six years as a senior developer with Storm ID.

 Mhairi Bell, 30, co-founded Gecko New Media with business partner Mike Octigan, 37. She said that from the outset the business focused on achieving the best return on investment for its clients, by fully understanding their needs and providing full support.

 The pair spotted early that websites would become far more than simple online brochures. Recognising the web would take centre stage as an integral business tool, they committed themselves in encouraging and helping clients to embed digital as part of their overall business strategy.

The former home of a childbirth and family planning pioneer has been transformed into a new base for Thorpe Molloy Recruitment.

The company, which is Scottish Small/Medium Recruitment Agency of The Year, thoughtfully renovated its new Aberdeen HQ, which was once home to women’s health and obstetrics legend Sir Dugald Baird and his wife Lady May Baird.

The project was handled – from conception to delivery – by Aberdeen-based Space Solutions, the country’s leading specialist in workplace planning and delivering modern, productive offices.

Derek Tough, the Space Solutions project manager for the contract, said: “This is a new chapter in the building’s history. We are delighted to have ensured a smooth and painless delivery for the staff at Thorpe Molloy.”

03--JUN-GOLF-1Three young UK golfers have cemented their credentials as stars of the future by retaining their titles at a prestigious junior tournament in Scotland.

11-year old prodigies Eloise Healey and Max Martin fought off stiff competition at this year’s U.S. Kids Golf European Championship to emerge victorious in the Girls 11 and Boys 11 categories, while Surrey youngster Samantha Fuller triumphed in the Girls 9s.

The youngsters had all won European Championship titles at last year’s competition and were aiming to be the first competitors to retain a U.S. Kids Golf title on home soil.

William Swales wears a tweed jacket, bow tie and thick, dark-framed glasses – but is transformed into a rock god when playing his electric guitar.

He was discovered by Edinburgh film maker Plum Films during a Britain’s Got Talent style open audtion at a renowned Scottish guitar shop.

Log fired pizza wagon

One of Edinburgh’s best loved Italian restaurants is taking its award-winning food on the road after launching the country’s first-ever log-fired pizza wagon.

La Favorita, on the Edinburgh’s Leith Walk, has launched a van which will visit events throughout Scotland bringing a refreshing alternative to soggy chips and chewy burgers.

Tony Crolla, Proprietor of La Favorita, made the £90,000 investment after a spotting a gap in the market for tasty and high-quality food on the go. He is now taking the unique van – equipped with a fully-working log fire – to a host of festivals and upcoming outdoor events this summer, including T in the Park, Rock Ness and the Edinburgh Fringe.

The U.S. Kids Golf European Championship has been given another major PR boost after Scottish sports minister Shona Robison attended the opening day of the competition.

The MSP visited Gullane Golf Club and spoke to youngsters from across the globe who had come to compete in the prestigious three-day tournament.

The U.S. Kids Golf European Championship is one of the world’s leading competitions for young golfers. More than 400 competitiors from 34 countries are participating in the 2009 event, which is being held across five historic courses in East Lothian and will see kids compete for places at the World Championships in Pinehurst later this year.

Ms Robison said: “In the year of Homecoming and at a great time for golf in Scotland, I am delighted that this tournament is returning to the home of the game.

“Golf is a big part of our culture, our identity and our economy in Scotland and taking up the sport is a fun and exciting way for children to enjoy being active and healthy.

“Offers over” property prices are likely to start dying out in Scotland with the introduction of next month’s Home Reports, according to one of the country’s leading solicitor-estate agents.

Warners has predicted that properties will start to be advertised for “offers around” after the new Home Report legislation is introduced on December 1, radically changing the way homes are listed for sale in Scotland.

Under the new legislation, every property that is put up for sale after December 1 will have to include a Home Report, which provide an all-inclusive property survey, an energy efficiency report and a seller’s questionaire.

But Warners, which is Edinburgh’s leading property solicitor in terms of property listings, property sales and total sales value in the ESPC for the past nine years, believes that as buyers will be able to view a Home Report and see how much a property is worth, they are less likely to consider asking prices above its official valuation.

The firm has said that potential buyers are likely to prefer choosing an offers around property to an offers over or fixed price, as there is more transparency over the figure they would be expected to put their opening bid at. However, they have stressed that – even at an offers around price – the final selling figure for a property could still rise above its Home Report valuation if there is enough interest to spark a bidding war.

Warners has already started listing properties in the Capital at “offers around” and says that it will be recommending the option to more sellers over the coming months.

Scott Brown, Estate Agency Partner with Warners, said: “Every home that is sold in Scotland from December 1 will need to have a Home Report. However, as each report includes a valuation of the property, it means that buyers can see how much every property has been valued for before they decide to make an offer.

“Effectively it will make it more difficult for homes to put up for sale at offers over or fixed prices. After all, if buyers are going to know how much the property is worth in advance, there’s no point in setting a price that is either well below or above that value.
“For example, if the Home Report estimates that your property is worth £300,000, you are unlikely to get anyone paying significantly over that figure – regardless of the offers over price you set. Even if you put the property on at offers over £270,000, it could dissuade prospective buyers, as they will wonder how much you really want to sell for and how far that will be above the valuation given in the Home Report.

“You’ll also find it difficult to set a fixed price on the property, as it’s unlikely that anyone will pay £350,000 when they know it is only worth £300,000.

“I believe that, because of this new legislation, we will start seeing a lot more ‘offers around’ prices being introduced and, eventually, this could mean the death of the offers over system that currently exists in Scotland.”

Scott adds that, although offers around has always been an option for property transactions in Scotland, it is rarely used as solicitors have traditionally preferred to set offers over or fixed prices.

However, he believes that the offers around price can beneficial to buyers, as it gives them a clearer indication about how much the property is likely to be sold for, and could encourage more first time buyers to make the first purchase on the property ladder.

He added: “With offers over, you have no idea how much you could end up paying to secure a property. Last year, when the market was at its peak, we had some flats being sold for 25% more than their offers over price and even now there are some sellers who still expect to achieve similarly high prices.

“However, with an offers around price, you immediately know the region the seller wants for it and can make your bid accordingly. If there’s a lot of interest, you may go higher than the value but, if you know there haven’t been many enquiries, you may want to try a price just below the figure. Either way, you know its going to be roughly the kind of price that the seller wants.

Warners - Edinburgh's leading solicitor estate agent“For sellers, the benefit is that you are setting a realistic price range around the official valuation of your property that is given in the Home Report – and you know that any offers you get will be in that range.

“It’s a similar pricing structure to the one that exists in England, where buyers can either bid just above or just below the set price. But although the two countries are likely to use similar property pricing in the future, that will be the only similarity between the English and Scottish property markets.

“Because of our system of missives, which ensure every property transaction stands up in its own right, we will always be fundamentally different from the English system – which is open to practices such as gazumping and allows buyers to pull out of a sale without warning.”
