Scottish design expert Space Solutions

Space Solutions, Scotland’s leading workplace solutions company, has appointed two senior managers to drive forward its specialist relocations and operations division.

The appointments of Derek Bateman and Ben Slater at The Hub in Livingston, West Lothian – which employs 36 people across all areas and manages minor moves to entire headquarter relocations – are central to Space Solutions’ plans for rapid growth for the division.

Derek Bateman, who has more than 30 years experience in the workplace industry, has been recruited as General Manager.

Derek, a qualified interior designer, previously ran his own company and worked for one of the UK’s leading furniture companies.

, Scotland’s leading workplace design specialist, showed the value of expert planning by carrying out the complete relocation of one of Scotland’s top accountancy firms – in a weekend.

A2+B called in Space Solutions after fearing the business could suffer if there was excessive ‘down time’ involved in the complex move from their original head office at Carden Place to new premises at Queen’s Road in Aberdeen.

Lee Brandie, business manager with Aberdeen-based Space Solutions, said: “This was a major project for our team with a number of specific challenges – not least the fact that we were relocating a total of 150 staff across the city, including all their equipment, furniture and IT systems.

The relocations division of Scotland’s leading workplace experts experienced its busiest month to date in October.

Operations staff at the Aberdeen headquarters of Space Solutions moved 1600 people from 16 companies – double the monthly average.

Space Solutions was involved in two moves into the prestigious new multi-million pound Union Plaza development in October. The team relocated international investment management group Aberdeen Asset Management, as well as 150 staff and 2000 crates from solicitors Paull & Williamsons.

Lee Brandie, Business Manager of the relocations and operations division at Space Solutions, said: “October was the busiest month the Aberdeen relocations team has dealt with to date.

“We knew well in advance that several major projects would be nearing completion around the same time, allowing us plenty of time to plan in minute detail for the projects.

“Planning was the key to the success during this very busy spell, along with the skills and experience of our hard working team.”

The 25 relocations staff moved 5000 crates in 50 lorry loads around the city.

Space Solutions, Scotland’s leading workplace design experts, is predicting another year of impressive growth fuelled by its specialist service in helping businesses to succeed during the credit crunch.

Latest annual figures (for year end to 30 June) for Space Solutions, which completed a management buy-out in July 2007, saw it achieve record turnover of £12.8 million.

But the company, which has its head office in Aberdeen with bases in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee and Peterborough, is forecasting sales to surge to £15.5 million for 2008-09 – a 22% increase – as it benefits from a soaring order book.

Space Solutions is Scotland’s biggest independent expert in helping businesses manage changes within the workplace. It operates UK-wide to design, build, fit out, refurbish and relocate modern and productive business environments.

But it is the firm’s meticulous approach to the science of space planning and workplace analysis, which is supporting an ever-growing number of businesses who face difficulties because of rising overheads or a failure to find finance for expansion, that is helping drive up expansion.

Managing Director Steve Judge said the future for Space Solutions is looking extremely bright.

He said: “We are delighted that turnover for the last financial year was ahead of expectations.  It was the first full year after our MBO so it’s a sign of our commitment to consistently exceed client expectations that we were able to exceed our sales targets.

“But it’s over the next year, that we expect to see very exciting times for Space Solutions.

“We are budgeting for a £15.5m turnover – up more than 20% – for our next year-end, which in the current difficult times is a sure sign of the continued confidence so many businesses are putting in us.

“In fact September represented our best month ever, recording a £1m+ increase in turnover than September 2007.”

Steve said a significant share of its recent success has been with businesses wanting to make more efficient use of their business space during the economic downturn – it recorded an estimated 22% increase in contracts across the Central Belt as firms of all sizes make changes to their premises to better cope with volatile market conditions.

Steve added: “There’s a real air of gloom around the property market, so it may be surprising to hear that, as a business whose entire currency is property, we are actually doing very well at the moment.

“Companies being forced to manage overheads and dramatically reshape operations to face up to the current economic climate may not be realising the full potential of one of their greatest assets – their property.

“We offer to undertake a comprehensive review of a clients’ property requirements and to provide advice on how to more efficiently occupy their space.  

“With proper workplace analysis and space planning, businesses are finding they can make significant savings or create vital additional space for an expansion they thought was impossible because of difficulties securing bank finance.”

In one case, Space Solutions worked with a major company to identify so much wastage in unnecessary storage, it was able to free up an entire floor of the building.

As a result, the firm has now sublet 1500 sq ft and has been able to focus more money and attention on long-term growth because it freed up so much additional capital.

Although founded in 1997, Space Solutions’ senior management team – lead by Steve Judge – completed a MBO In July 2007.

Scotland’s leading workplace design experts Space Solutions has been awarded the architecture and project management contracts for a £4.5 million project for Champion Technologies.

The company relocated its Eastern Hemisphere staff to a purpose-built office in Altens Industrial Estate three years ago. It will now construct a 1400 sq m laboratory and technology facility on the adjacent site. This will allow the company to have its regional office, plant operations base and technology centre on the same site.

Champion Technologies is the biggest privately owned oilfield chemical company in the world and offers innovative and environmentally acceptable solutions to the oil and gas sector. The new technology centre will enhance Champion’s research and development, chemical and product analysis services to the oil and gas industry.

Mark Dellaquaglia, Senior Associate at Space Solutions, Scotland’s biggest independent expert in managing change within the workplace, said: “Champion Technologies is making a major investment in developing its Aberdeen base and it is great that Space Solutions is so heavily involved in that development.

“This is an exciting project, to apply our knowledge in architecture and space planning to a bespoke laboratory and to also target a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating, the highest environmental award possible.

“But we have relished the challenge and created a unique building design that will provide a fabulous workplace for the employees.”

There are five chemical generic processes and applications that will be housed within the building, with high pressure, high temperature operations located in distinctly isolated areas. The building will be an industry-leading technology centre for research and development.

Harry Montgomerie, Eastern Hemisphere Division Business Unit Manager at Champion Technologies, said: “We were very impressed by Space Solutions innovative ideas and experience in commercial property planning.

“We are making a significant investment in order that our Aberdeen facilities become some of the best in the world.  This is another Champion Technologies investment in our people and our business partners.”

Space Solutions will lead an experienced design team comprising Cameron Chisholm Dawson Partnership, Murray Montgomery Partnership and WA Fairhurst and Partners.

The project, which has been in the planning stages for around a year, will go on site during November and will take a year to complete.

Staff from Scotland’s leading workplace design specialist Space Solutions raised over £1000 for Sense Scotland by taking part in a rafting event.

The team of six ‘Space Cadets’, John Mulgrew, Chris Andres, William Campbell, Yvonne Jansen, Robert Griffiths and Stephen Griffiths, from the company’s Glasgow office in Bath Street and its Dundee office in Gemini Crescent, tackled the River Tummel in Perthshire.

The team raised £1118 through considerable support from Space Solutions management, as well as colleagues, clients, as well as their friends and families.

John Mulgrew, Commercial Manager at Space Solutions who organised the team, said: “It was an absolutely fantastic day. I have to admit it was a bit scary at times particularly when we managed to capsize at the bottom of an 18ft drop but that was all part of the fun and made it all the more exhilarating.

“Unfortunately we were unable to paddle our way back to first place after that but we are delighted to have raised this sum for a charity such as Sense Scotland which does invaluable work for deaf, blind and disabled children. We will be back again next year.”

In July staff from the Aberdeen office of Space Solutions completed the Three Peaks Challenge, climbing Britain’s three highest mountains, raising over £3500 for Marie Curie Cancer Care.

Workplace experts have revealed how the credit crunch is forcing thousands of Scottish businesses to consider how they can make more efficient use of their business space.

Space Solutions is Scotland’s biggest independent expert in managing workplace change and its fortunes have shown a dramatic upswing in the first half of 2008.

Director Derek Binnie says the firm has seen an estimated 22% increase from the same period last year in contracts across the Central Belt as businesses of all sizes make changes to their premises to better cope with volatile market conditions.

He said: “The credit crunch has created a general air of gloom around the property market, so people are often surprised to hear that, as a business whose entire currency is property, we are actually doing very well at the moment.
 “The reasons for that are pretty simple. For most companies, property is the second biggest cost on their balance sheet. When the market is tough they take a far more detailed look at how their premises are performing. That is where we come in.”

With 130 staff and five main offices, Space Solutions operates UK-wide design, build, fit out and refurbish modern and productive business environments. Its team provides expertise in architecture, space planning, interior design, construction, project management and relocations.

Derek added: “Forward-thinking businesses realise there is some pretty serious science involved in proper space planning – it is not just a case of knocking down walls and shifting desks around.

“Having a responsive, well-planned workplace is a key factor in everything from efficient use of resources, motivating staff and creating the right impression with customers.

“Factors involved include having the right amount of storage space to ensuring all the communications system work efficiently. With proper workplace analysis and space planning business can make significant savings.”

“Yes, there is an outlay, because businesses have to spend to make a saving. But the returns from a successful streamlining of the workplaces can be vast and long-term for most businesses. 

“There is no doubt the careful and expert planning and management services we offer will be increasingly in demand in 2008 and 2009. Particularly in the Central Belt, where the credit crush is having more of an impact than the oil-rich area around Aberdeen.”
